This year’s rainy season was very looong… rainy season in Japan usually lasts throughout June, however, this year it officially ended this week (last week of July). It is also true that in June we had many sunny days for a rainy season, but most of July was so gloomy and cold, I would even wear a sweater on some days. Despite the gloomy and cold days, there is one thing I like about Japan’s rainy season: hydrangeas or ajisai 紫陽花 in Japanese. These beautiful flowers are like little gems shining in the dark.
My friend Mike, a very talented photographer (click here for his portfolio) and I decided not to miss this chance and go out to take some portraits with these beautiful flowers. We revisited a place famous for hydrangeas where I’ve also been last year, Asukayama Park. It can be easily reached by tram from Waseda station, on the Toden Arakawa Line, but it is also close to Oji station, for those who prefer going by train.
Asukayama Park is famous both for cherry blossoms in March-April and for hydrangeas in June-July. I only visited it during the hydrangea season and I love the many colorful hydrangeas that can be found there, in shades of pink, purple, blue, all my favorite colors.
