It’s June which means the month of 梅雨 tsuyu (rainy season) in Japan. Although the rainy season can be quite depressing, with weeks of endless rain and rarely a sunny day, one thing to look forward to is the 紫陽花 ajisai (hydrangea) season. I used to have white hydrangeas in my garden back home but in Japan, I have seen hydrangeas in beautiful shades of blue, purple, pink, ranging from dark tones to delicate pastels. Hydrangeas in Japan are really mesmerizing!
They can be seen here and there in Tokyo but there are some special places (like with most flowers in Japan, as I mentioned here) where you can see lots of them! I only visited one place famous for ajisai this year and it was so beautiful that I decided to go back when it rains (first time I went on a sunny day).
This place is Asukayama Park, near Oji Station or on Toden Arakawa Line, Asukayama Station. Toden Arakawa Line is a streetcar line, one of the two remaining ones in Tokyo. They offer interesting day tours and special packages with spots you can visit along the line. So I decided to take the tram to Asukayama station for about 30 minutes in order to reach the park and admire these beautiful flowers.
I will let the photos speak for themselves!
Thank you for stopping by! 🙂
